Barcelona reportedly sign Rodri from Man City

Barcelona have finalized one of the summer’s marquee transfers, agreeing to a £65.4 million (€76.5m) fee with Manchester City for the signing of Rodri. The Spanish international has committed to a four-year agreement and is set to complete his medical examination and paperwork prior to his formal presentation by the La Liga champions.

This transfer concludes Rodri’s remarkable seven-season tenure at the Etihad, where he established himself among the world’s elite midfielders and served as the central engine of City’s dominant era.

Why did Barcelona sign Rodri?

Barcelona identified Rodri as their primary midfield target and maintained their pursuit despite Manchester City turning down two previous offers. The Catalan club progressively raised their financial proposal until City accepted the third bid, with Rodri’s preference for a return to Spain proving decisive during negotiations. Because the midfielder had entered the final twelve months of his deal, City faced the choice of selling him during this window or risking his departure on a free transfer next summer.

What does Rodri’s exit mean to Manchester City?

Rodri leaves behind an incredible legacy in Manchester. Following his 2019 arrival from Atlético Madrid, he logged 298 appearances and secured 12 major trophies – including four Premier League titles and the Champions League – notably netting the decisive goal against Inter Milan in the 2023 Champions League final.

The pinnacle of his time at Manchester City occurred when he was awarded the 2024 Ballon d’Or, confirming his place among global football’s elite. City manager Enzo Maresca acknowledged after their Community Shield loss to Arsenal that “all teams need Rodri,” and the club is actively stepping up efforts to strengthen their midfield before the transfer deadline.

Rodri’s arrival fundamentally alters Barcelona’s midfield setup. His capacity to control possession, screen the defensive line, and govern the game’s rhythm provides the Spanish champions with a premier anchor capable of raising the level of an already gifted squad.
