Mourinho on Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United Sack

In his most recent interview, José Mourinho offered his thoughts on Manchester United’s choice to dismiss Ruben Amorim from his position as head coach. A Personal Perspective The former United manager noted that only the Portuguese tactician himself can truly account for why his time at Old Trafford reached an abrupt conclusion.

Drawing parallels to his own 2018 exit from the club, Mourinho chose to avoid public criticism of the decision. Instead, he highlighted that the most valuable reflections on such a turbulent 14-month period should happen behind closed doors. “The events of Ruben Amorim’s 14 months are for him alone to analyze,” Mourinho remarked. He expressed confidence that Amorim and his staff would conduct their own review, noting that any public explanation is entirely up to the coach.

United’s leadership explained the sacking as a necessary “reset” to improve their league standing. While Darren Fletcher handles interim duties, high-profile names like Oliver Glasner, Roberto De Zerbi, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have been linked to the permanent role.

Mourinho was asked if this failure might hurt the image of Portuguese managers in England.

He rejected the idea, insisting that one coach’s experience does not define the rest. “There is no reason it should,” he stated firmly. He argued that every manager is responsible for their own results and that he does not see Amorim’s situation as a reflection on Portuguese coaching as a whole.

Mourinho looked back at his own stint at the club, reminding listeners that he inherited a team struggling with the void left by Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill. He noted that even with trophies and a second-place finish, true stability remained elusive. “When I arrived, the club was still in the middle of a crisis,” Mourinho said. He explained that despite his achievements on the pitch, it wasn’t enough to fix the deep-seated issues within the organization.

However, Mourinho noted that the patience shown to Amorim – who stayed in the job despite a historically poor Premier League finish – suggests a shifting culture under the club’s new owners. “That level of support shows a change in the club’s philosophy,” he concluded. He praised Amorim’s character and potential, suggesting that with the right environment, the young coach is more than capable of reaching the highest levels of the game.
