Clearlake Capital Group has finalized an agreement to secure complete ownership of Chelsea Football Club by purchasing the stakes belonging to Todd Boehly and Mark Walter.
The transaction signals a major reorganization of the management framework established following the consortium’s acquisition of the London team from Roman Abramovich in 2022. Following the leadership shift, Todd Boehly will step down from his role as Chelsea chairman, while Swiss entrepreneur Hansjörg Wyss will maintain his position as a prominent investor and partner inside the group.
Chelsea verified that Clearlake will likewise absorb Walter’s holdings, leaving the private equity firm with sole governance over the organisation.
Boehly Concludes His Tenure at Stamford Bridge
Boehly and Clearlake originally partnered in 2022 to spearhead the £4.25 billion purchase of the West London club. Throughout their joint tenure, the ownership injected substantial capital into the men’s squad, women’s roster, youth academy, Cobham training grounds, medical facilities, and overall development structures. Reflecting on his term, Boehly noted that serving as chairman was a privilege, offering appreciation to the fans, squad, coaching department, and administrative personnel while sharing optimism regarding Chelsea’s trajectory under Clearlake.
Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano emphasized that the upcoming chapter will focus on building upon the foundational framework put in place over recent years. The leadership pair outlined commitments to keep funding club facilities, pitch performance, and talent pipelines, focusing on long-term sustainability and success both on and off the field.
