An official announcement issued early this morning confirmed the departure of former Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly, bringing fresh clarity to the leadership setup at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea has officially entered a new phase of governance after Todd Boehly and Mark Walter finalized the sale of their financial stakes, transferring complete operational control of the Premier League side to Clearlake Capital.
The agreement concludes Boehly’s four-year tenure as club chairman, positioning Clearlake – the U.S. private equity firm launched by Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano – as the sole managing force in West London.
Who holds ownership of Chelsea now?
Clearlake Capital Group now serves as the single controlling entity at Chelsea after securing the shares previously held by Boehly and Walter.
Clearlake is far from a new presence at Stamford Bridge. The investment firm formed part of the original consortium that bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in May 2022, serving as the majority shareholder from the onset.
Prior to this latest buyout, Clearlake maintained a 61.5% stake in the organisation, while Boehly, Walter, and Swiss investor Hansjörg Wyss shared minority holdings. Chelsea confirmed that Wyss will retain his position as a key partner and stakeholder within the updated structure.
Who are Behdad Eghbali and José Feliciano?
Established in 2006 by Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, Clearlake Capital has grown into a major financial player with significant influence over Chelsea’s trajectory.
Headquartered in California, the firm oversees a broad portfolio across tech sectors, industrial markets, and consumer enterprises. Eghbali, in particular, established a highly visible presence around the club following the 2022 deal, playing a hands-on role in operational management.
With Boehly stepping aside, Clearlake’s move to full control eliminates the dual-governance model that guided the club over the last four years.
What prompted Todd Boehly’s exit?
Boehly emerged as the public representative of the takeover group in 2022, assuming the chair position after Abramovich’s departure.
However, reports of strategic disagreements between Boehly and Clearlake concerning the club’s long-term vision surfaced during their four years of joint leadership.
A central point of contention involved the redevelopment plans for Stamford Bridge. In 2025, Boehly publicly noted that the co-owners needed to align on stadium strategy, hinting that the partners might eventually split if their long-term goals remained divergent.
Boehly has now divested his equity and formally relinquished the chairmanship. In his farewell remarks, the American executive stated that guiding Chelsea was a privilege, expressing trust in the club’s path under Clearlake’s leadership.
Although Clearlake has held majority ownership since 2022, Boehly’s departure grants the firm absolute administrative control over the institution it has co-managed for the past four years.
