Manchester United manager Michael Carrick strongly criticized the decision to allow Erling Haaland’s controversial winning goal in Sunday’s Manchester derby.

Manchester City secured a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford after Haaland scored in the second half, despite the goal initially being ruled out for offside on the pitch. The call was overturned following a VAR review, which determined Haaland was in an onside position when Joško Gvardiol sent in the cross.

However, Manchester United were incensed because City midfielder Enzo Fernández was in an offside position and made a clear attempt to play the ball during the build-up.Carrick characterized the decision and its subsequent explanation as “staggering,” questioning how the VAR officials failed to consider Fernández’s direct influence on the play.

“How you can say Enzo Fernández does not interfere with the play literally is beyond me,” Carrick said. “It’s staggering, I’m confused. We put things in place in the game now. We have people in offices with all the screens for this.”

The United manager also voiced deep concern regarding how the offside rule is being interpreted and questioned the overall effectiveness of the review technology in pivotal moments.

Haaland’s controversial Goal: Officiating Body Admits Error

Carrick’s frustrations were validated later that evening when Pro Ref, the body overseeing Premier League officiating, publicly admitted that the VAR decision was flawed. The organization acknowledged that the VAR failed to recognize Fernández’s positional influence on United’s defenders and stated that referee Michael Oliver should have been instructed to conduct an on-field review at the pitch-side monitor.

Despite having a numerical advantage for over an hour after Phil Foden was shown a straight red card in the 23rd minute, Manchester United could not find a way past City’s defense. Haaland’s contested goal proved to be the decisive strike. The result leaves Carrick confronting tough questions after United failed to capitalize on the extra man, while Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with four wins from four matches.
