Following the Teranga Lions’ early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Senegal Football Federation (FSF) has officially clarified its decision to part ways with head coach Pape Thiaw. Thiaw, who stepped into the role in December 2024, endured a grueling tournament that began on the wrong foot with back-to-back group-stage defeats against France and Norway.
While the West African side bounced back with a dominant 5-0 thrashing of Iraq – narrowly sneaking into the knockout rounds as one of the top third-placed teams – their tournament ultimately ended in heartbreak. Facing Belgium in the Round of 32, Senegal appeared destined for the next stage after establishing a commanding 2-0 lead. However, a late-game meltdown saw them bits of control, conceding two quick goals before eventually falling 3-2 after a crushing extra-time penalty.
Reasons why Senegal parted ways with head coach
The dramatic exit triggered widespread backlash from fans and cast a shadow over Thiaw’s tactical leadership. Compounding the pressure, midfielder Pape Gueye publicly declared he would step away from the national team for as long as the current coaching staff remained in power, signaling deeper issues behind the scenes.
Addressing the firing, the FSF noted that the move came after a rigorous assessment of the squad’s recent performances and future trajectory, asserting that terminating Thiaw’s contract was essential in the best interests of Senegalese football. With the vacancy now open, the federation is hunting for a successor to spearhead the nation’s rebuild ahead of upcoming international cycles.
