Gianluigi Donnarumma confirms move to Man City

His permanent transfer to Manchester City from Paris Saint-Germain was completed on the deadline day of the 2025 summer transfer window, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma signed a five-year contract that will keep until the summer of 2030.

The Italian international was taken out of the PSG squad by manager Luis Enrique after the club’s defeat to Chelsea at the Club World Cup in July 2025. This, along with his exclusion from the UEFA Super Cup match against Tottenham Hotspur, led Gianluigi Donnarumma to seek a new club.

The move for Donnarumma followed the departure of veteran Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, who joined Turkish club Fenerbahçe after eight years at the Etihad. The Brazilian, who joined the club in 2017 from Benfica, made 372 appearances and kept 168 clean sheets.

Donnarumma’s arrival at City could impact James Trafford, who recently joined the club from Burnley for £27m. With Trafford’s struggling form in the opening three games of the season, it is expected that Pep Guardiola will favor the new signing, potentially relegating Trafford to the bench.

Gianluigi Donnarumma on His Move to Manchester City

Donnarumma expressed his excitement about joining Manchester City, stating:

“To have signed for Man City is such a special and proud moment for me. I am joining a squad packed with world-class talent and a team led by the one of the greatest managers in the history of football in Pep Guardiola. This is a club every player in world football would love to join.

I have admired watching Man City for many years so to now be able to play for the club is a huge honour and a privilege. I cannot wait to meet my new teammates, the staff and the fans. Playing at the Etihad Stadium will be very, very special for me. I am very excited for what lies ahead and can promise that I will give absolutely everything to try and help the Club achieve even more success.”
