José Mourinho departs Fenerbahçe after a year

José Mourinho is no longer the head coach of Fenerbahçe, effective immediately.

Fenerbahçe confirmed José Mourinho departure on its social media channels on Friday, August 29, 2025. The decision was made just days after the team failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage, losing to Benfica over two legs.

The 62-year-old was appointed in 2024 and led Fenerbahçe to a second-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig, 11 points behind champions Galatasaray. His team also struggled in other competitions, being eliminated from the Turkish Cup in the quarter-finals and the Europa League in the round of 16 by Rangers.

In a statement, the Turkish club thanked Mourinho for his work since the start of the 2024–25 season and wished him success in his future endeavors.

Mourinho’s sacking comes amid rumors that Ruben Amorim could be leaving his role as head coach of Manchester United due to a poor start to the 2025–26 season.

Despite his recent struggles, Mourinho is still widely considered one of the best managers in football history, with a track record of success at clubs like Porto, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester United.
