Morocco has reportedly surfaced as a viable backup host for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) amid mounting anxieties regarding the speed of preparations across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Multiple sources indicate that the Confederation of African Football has engaged Morocco regarding a potential takeover should the trio of East African co-hosts miss vital infrastructure and logistical milestones. Nonetheless, CAF has not issued any formal declaration stripping the current hosts of the tournament.
The official stance of African football’s governing body maintains that Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will collectively stage the 2027 competition between June 19 and July 17, 2027. Secured in 2023, the event represents a historic milestone as the first-ever AFCON shared by three nations.
Why is Morocco being linked to AFCON 2027?
Talks concerning Morocco stem directly from worries over delayed infrastructure progress in East Africa. Recent inspection tours by CAF officials – which evaluated key venues like Kenya’s Talanta Stadium, Uganda’s Mandela National Stadium, and Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa Stadium – highlighted that certain development phases were trailing behind schedule, even though organizers expressed hope that pending projects would catch up.

This pacing has reportedly pushed CAF to evaluate fallback options. Having just staged the 2025 edition, Morocco stands out as an obvious contingency choice given its robust stadium infrastructure and proven track record with major tournaments. Still, being weighed as a backup plan falls far short of an official reassignment.
Current Status and Next Steps
CAF’s official schedule still firmly points to the East African partnership for the 24-team tournament, marking the competition’s return to the region for the first time since Ethiopia hosted in 1976.
The upcoming months will serve as a decisive window for Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda as CAF closely audits their progress. Should the co-hosts satisfy all logistical and venue requirements, the historic tournament will move forward as scheduled. If critical delays persist, however, the governing body retains the option to trigger a formal relocation.
