FIFA and CAF have instructed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to freeze its current electoral proceedings while both governing bodies evaluate the administrative, legal, governance, and electoral ramifications of recent developments.

The directive was formally communicated in a letter dated September 7, issued by FIFA Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov to NFF Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme. Consequently, all further actions linked to the NFF elections are suspended until this review concludes.

As part of the evaluation, a joint FIFA-CAF delegation is scheduled to travel to Abuja. The delegation will engage key stakeholders and examine the circumstances surrounding the leadership changes, including their legal and administrative impacts on the federation.

However, FIFA emphasized that no final conclusions have been reached, and no decisions regarding potential sanctions or disciplinary measures against the NFF have been made at this time.

Why Did the NFF Leadership Resign?

Ibrahim Musa Gusau stepped down alongside General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the Executive Committee following mounting pressure over the performances of Nigeria’s national football teams. Gusau explained that the decision was intended to clear the way for a sweeping reform process to tackle institutional, governance, and developmental obstacles in Nigerian football.

According to NFF and National Sports Commission representatives, FIFA had previously accepted the resignations of the former officials. High-level discussions regarding governance reforms have since continued among Nigerian sports authorities, FIFA, and CAF.

What Lies Ahead for the NFF?

The primary focus now shifts to the joint FIFA-CAF delegation’s findings in Abuja. The global and continental governing bodies will assess whether the current electoral process can safely resume and outline the necessary steps to re-establish administrative stability within the NFF.

In the meantime, Nigerian football enters a period of transition, with both the federation’s leadership structure and its electoral path remaining under strict international oversight.
