Starting in the 2026/27 season, FIFA is instituting a major change to the men’s international match calendar by consolidating the traditional September and October breaks into a single, extended window.

The inaugural combined break is scheduled for September 21 to October 6, 2026. Spanning 16 days, this enlarged release period allows national teams to contest up to four matches in one block, replacing the historic structure of two separate autumn windows. As a result, major domestic competitions – such as the Premier League and other top European leagues – will experience an extended mid-season pause of approximately three weeks.

Ratified as part of FIFA’s 2026-2030 international match framework, the reform aims to bring structure to the international schedule, ensure meaningful fixture scheduling, and address player workload concerns.

Overview of the Revised FIFA Calendar

Under the restructured format, the standard autumn slate is streamlined by merging the September and October slots. The remaining international dates in November, March, and June maintain their usual schedule, with most allowing up to two matches per window:

International WindowWindow DurationMax Fixtures
Combined Autumn WindowSept 21 – Oct 6, 2026Up to 4 matches
November WindowNov 9 – Nov 17, 2026Up to 2 matches
March WindowMar 22 – Mar 30, 2027Up to 2 matches
June WindowJun 7 – Jun 15, 2027Up to 2 matches

For clubs and players, consolidating these dates reduces early-season disruptions to the domestic campaign while establishing a single long break. For national federations, the change streamlines logistics and reduces long-distance travel, allowing multiple competitive fixtures to be completed in a single release period. Football stakeholders across all levels will be monitoring how effectively teams adapt to the new model throughout the 2026/27 campaign.
