Cameroon Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o has publicly defended FIFA President Gianni Infantino as scrutiny intensifies ahead of the global body’s March 2027 presidential election.
The former Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Chelsea forward dismissed calls for Infantino to step down, maintaining that the FIFA chief has committed no missteps. Eto’o attributed much of the surrounding backlash to political timing, arguing that opposition has mounted specifically because Infantino is mounting a re-election campaign.

Eto’o commended Infantino’s tenure, emphasizing his expansion of international competitions to grant historically underrepresented nations greater access to top-tier football. “He has changed football,” stated Eto’o, pointing to FIFA’s increased structural and financial backing for smaller member associations, particularly across Africa.
The former Cameroon captain also addressed the shelved FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative, which sought private investment tied to commercial rights for FIFA events. While the proposal was withdrawn following widespread pushback, Eto’o suggested that revisiting discussions on the concept could unlock major financial benefits for African football.

While several continental bodies and key figures continue to challenge Infantino’s leadership, Eto’o remains steadfast in his support, contending that any evaluation of Infantino’s presidency should occur strictly through the democratic voting process in 2027.
