Why did Real Madrid sue UEFA 4.5 billion euros?

The long-running feud over the controversial European Super League has reached a dramatic flashpoint. Real Madrid and A22 Sports Management, the Super League’s architects, are reportedly preparing to unleash a massive €4.5 billion lawsuit against Europe’s football governing body, UEFA.

This unprecedented legal action accuses UEFA of a gross abuse of its dominant position, leveraging a landmark EU antitrust ruling to claim the body unfairly restricted competition within European football. This lawsuit, an extraordinary escalation in the saga, is not just about competition; it’s about colossal money.

According to AS, the claim seeks compensation for staggering losses, including forfeited revenue, severe reputational damage, and the competitive disadvantages allegedly stemming from UEFA’s near-absolute monopoly over continental club tournaments. After months of failed talks and “unproductive negotiations” between the parties, lawyers for Madrid and A22 are now finalizing the documentation to officially file the claim.

How did Real Madrid kick-off the $4.5 Billion Lawsuit Against UEFA?

The groundwork for this financial demand was laid by a recent Madrid court decision that conclusively dismissed UEFA’s appeals. The court ruled that the governing body had “seriously violated EU free competition laws.”

For club president Florentino Pérez, this is the judicial breakthrough he has spent years fighting for, providing the legal foundation to demand restitution for what the club views as systematic obstruction. The entire conflict is rooted in the December 2023 ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), which determined that UEFA’s requirement for pre-approving new competitions was a breach of EU antitrust laws.

That judgment was later solidified by the Spanish Audiencia Provincial, which explicitly ruled that UEFA had exploited its market dominance to suppress the Super League. This verdict has not only vindicated Madrid’s steadfast claims but has set the stage for what is shaping up to be the most financially significant lawsuit in the history of global football.
