For the first time in its 96-year history, FIFA is introducing a brand-new tradition for World Cup winners: custom championship rings.
Borrowing a page from the playbook of major North American sports leagues like the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL, football’s global governing body will now hand out these prestigious rings alongside the classic winners’ medals and the legendary World Cup Trophy.
Moving forward, each tournament champion will receive 30 exclusive rings dedicated to the players and essential staff who secured the title. Supporters will also get a chance to share in the milestone; FIFA plans to drop a limited edition of 1,996 commemorative rings for the public.
This specific production number honors 1996, the year FIFA originally debuted its official World Cup champions’ badge. While these pieces are expected to instantly become highly coveted collector’s items, FIFA has not yet released the final designs, pricing, or an official launch date for the fan edition.
