Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has voiced strong confidence regarding his prospects of claiming the 2026 Ballon d’Or, declaring that his performance level and achievements over the past year warrant the award.
The 19-year-old winger has positioned himself among the frontrunners for the honor following an extraordinary campaign for club and country. Yamal was instrumental in helping Barcelona secure another LaLiga championship before going on to play a pivotal role in Spain’s World Cup victory.
What did Lamine Yamal say concerning this year’s Ballon d’Or contest?
Addressing the race for the accolade, Yamal named Kylian Mbappé as his primary competitor while stressing that his team honors give him the stronger case. He stated;
“Kylian Mbappe and me are the best two players in the world. But this year, I believe I deserve to win the Ballon d’Or.”
The Spanish international pointed out the distinction between his trophy haul and Mbappé’s statistical output. Although the Real Madrid star enjoyed a prolific scoring year, finishing as top scorer in LaLiga, the Champions League, and the World Cup, he did not claim a major team title during the evaluation cycle.

Conversely, Yamal contends that pairing a World Cup title with Spain and a LaLiga crown with Barcelona alongside his individual output builds a compelling argument. The young forward finished as runner-up to Ousmane Dembélé in last year’s Ballon d’Or voting, placing him in familiar territory near the summit of the rankings.
The recipient of the 2026 Ballon d’Or will be revealed in London on October 26, with Yamal and Mbappé headlining the list of primary contenders.
