2026 Ballon d’Or award organizers officially clarified that playing for a club outside of Europe does not disqualify a player from winning football’s most coveted individual prize, as the confirmation explicitly leaves the door open for Lionel Messi and other global stars playing outside Europe’s traditional leagues to remain in active contention for future editions of the award.

These also means that players playing in clubs such as Major League Soccer (MLS) or the Saudi Pro League , even Nigerian professional football league can also contend for the award. This means that Ballon d’Or is a global award for footballers worldwide.

The Evolution of Eligibility Rules

To resolve lingering confusion, France Football highlighted that the geographic restrictions once tied to the prize have long been dismantled:

  • 1956 – 1994: Strictly reserved for European players playing in European leagues.
  • 1995 – 2006: Opened up to players of any nationality, but they were still required to represent a European-based club.
  • 2007 – Present: All geographic limitations were completely abandoned. The Ballon d’Or is officially a global honor, evaluated solely on performance, regardless of which league or continent a player competes in.

Lionel Messi history with Ballon d’Or

Lionel Messi has already proven the reality of this rule structure. In 2023, he became the first active player from a non-European club to win the Men’s Ballon d’Or, claiming his eighth trophy shortly after joining Inter Miami.

While that achievement was heavily weighted by his final season with Paris Saint-Germain under the award’s single-season judging calendar, the precedent stands. Although European-based players continue to dominate the honor – with recent winners like Rodri in 2024 and Ousmane Dembélé in 2025 representing major European sides – the organizers reiterate that if a player’s seasonal performances capture the votes, geography is no barrier.
