Villarreal midfielder and former Arsenal star Thomas Partey has been ruled out of Ghana’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Panama due to a stance visa rejection by Canadian immigration authorities.
The governing body of world football, FIFA, verified the development on Friday, June 12, 2026. Because of the ruling, the veteran midfielder is barred from traveling with the rest of the Black Stars squad from their American preparation base in Boston to Toronto for the Group L curtain-raiser.
Official FIFA Stance
In response to inquiries, FIFA clarified that border entries and immigration verdicts fall strictly under the jurisdiction of sovereign host governments and remain entirely outside the federation’s control.
“FIFA can confirm that player Thomas Partey will be unable to travel from Ghana’s Team Base Camp in Boston, USA, to Canada for their first match against Panama on Wednesday, 17 June, as his visa application has been refused by the Canadian government. FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas. As with previous FIFA events, the host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted into the country.”
The 32-year-old remains fully cleared to participate in Ghana’s subsequent group fixtures hosted within the United States, which feature high-stakes matches against England and Croatia.
Media reports suggest the visa denial is tied to active legal proceedings in the United Kingdom, where Partey faces trial on multiple counts to which he has entered a plea of not guilty. Canadian government officials have declined to comment publicly on the specifics of the individual case.
