Lewandowski reason behind goal drought at Barcelona

Robert Lewandowski has revealed the startling extent of Barcelona’s financial crisis during his debut season, claiming the club subtly encouraged him to stop scoring to save money.

In an interview with Poland’s Radio Zet, the veteran striker confirmed that club officials approached him toward the end of the 2022-23 campaign. The goal was to avoid triggering expensive performance bonuses owed to his former club, Bayern Munich, as part of his €45 million transfer agreement.

Despite the awkward request, Lewandowski played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s first post-Messi La Liga title. He admitted that while he understood the club’s desperate need to “save every euro,” the situation created a significant mental conflict during matches.

Nevertheless, his professionalism prevailed; he finished the season with 23 goals, securing both the league trophy and the Pichichi award as top scorer.
