Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has clarified his choice to name Cristiano Ronaldo in his latest national squad, emphasizing that the veteran forward’s spot is earned purely through on-field value rather than past reputation.
Now 41, Ronaldo remains a prominent figure for Portugal and earned a place in Jesus’ inaugural squad as manager. As the national team kicks off a fresh chapter, the newly appointed manager stressed that performance and current contributions remain the sole criteria for selection.
Jesus on Cristiano Ronaldo’s call-up
Addressing Ronaldo’s unique stature in world football, Jesus made it clear that historical accolades will not guarantee playing time under his tenure.
“His performance is what matters. The past doesn’t count. Cristiano is a player like all the others. If he is performing well, he will play. If he isn’t, he won’t. He has a different status and has won five Ballon d’Or awards, but does that influence my decisions? No. But is he a different player? Absolutely.”
The former Al-Hilal and Fenerbahçe tactician reinforced that every squad member will be held to the same standard. Starting spots will depend entirely on current form, signaling Jesus’ commitment to fostering fierce competition within the locker room – even for a five-time Ballon d’Or winner and record-holding international scorer.

While Ronaldo’s unmatched international goal record and extensive experience provide Jesus with a proven attacking asset, the message is firm: reputation alone will not dictate line-ups in this new era for Portugal.
