Chelsea captain Reece James has withdrawn from the England squad for the upcoming international window due to an injury sustained in the recent Premier League match against Liverpool.
The right-back’s fitness has been a priority for manager Enzo Maresca since the start of the 2024/25 season. On his Instagram, James clarified the nature of the injury, describing it as a significant gash on his leg, suggesting a precaution-based withdrawal, especially given the lower stakes of the fixtures.
Who will replace Reece James in England’s Upcoming Fixture?
In response, Manchester City’s promising midfielder, Nico O’Reilly, has received his inaugural senior England call-up, stepping up from the Under-21s to replace James.
O’Reilly, a City academy product, broke into the first team last season with 21 appearances and five goals, and has featured nine times under Pep Guardiola this campaign.
England is scheduled to face Wales at Wembley on Thursday, October 9, 2025, followed by a World Cup qualifying match against Latvia in Riga on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
