The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially published the results for the 2025 Second Series Private Candidate WASSCE, conducted via computer-based testing. This year’s data indicates a notable decline in academic performance, with the overall pass rate dropping by 11.47 percentage points compared to the previous year.

Performance Benchmarks and Context

According to a statement from Moyosola Adesina, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, 42.17% of candidates earned credits in five or more subjects, including the mandatory English Language and Mathematics. This reflects a downward trend when compared to the 53.64% recorded in 2024 and 44.29% in 2023. WAEC clarified that these figures should not be compared to regular school-based exams, as private candidates operate independently of the formal education system.

Candidate Statistics

Of the 65,752 individuals who completed the exam, 27,727 met the five-credit benchmark (including English and Math). Broader data shows that 33,989 candidates (51.69%) achieved five credits regardless of whether English or Math were included. Overall interest in the exam grew slightly, with registration rising by 1.8% to a total of 69,604 applicants.

Processing Status and Malpractice

Currently, 94.21% of results (61,943) have been fully processed and released. The remaining 3,809 results are undergoing finalization due to candidate-related errors. Furthermore, 1,899 results (2.89%) are being withheld pending investigations into alleged examination malpractice; affected individuals will be notified once a final decision is reached.

Demographic Breakdown

The candidate pool was nearly balanced by gender, consisting of 32,005 males (48.68%) and 33,747 females (51.32%). In the high-performance bracket (five credits including English and Math), females slightly outperformed males with 14,311 successful candidates compared to 13,416 males.
