A recent social media exchange between Nigerian rappers Phenom and Ycee has brought the complex economics and dynamics of collaboration in Nigeria’s hip-hop space into sharp focus.
The controversy was triggered by Phenom’s tweet on X, where he lamented the difficulty of securing features from top artists for his upcoming work. Phenom nostalgically recalled providing opportunities to rising talents like Ycee and Falz during his peak, contrasting that period of support with the current professional roadblocks he faces.
“Funny how when you’re trending, everyone wants a verse, but when you reach out, suddenly they’re all ‘busy.’ I remember when I helped a few rappers on their way up. Now it’s crickets,” he posted.
The response from Ycee was swift and direct, challenging Phenom’s narrative of mentorship. The “Jagaban” hitmaker insisted that the feature in question was a professional, paid transaction, not a favor. Ycee also pointed out that Phenom had repurposed a bar Ycee originally performed on a track with Olamide.

“Don’t twist the story,” Ycee argued. “You paid me for that feature, and you even reused my bar from another record. Let’s be real.” While Phenom later asserted Ycee was not the intended target of his original frustration, the exchange became a flashpoint for fan debate.
The reaction highlights the tension between viewing early collaborations as favors and viewing them strictly as professional, paid business agreements, fueling ongoing discussions about support, ego, and the structure of the Nigerian music industry.
