Following Enzo Fernández’s high-profile £125 million transfer to Manchester City, Chelsea were left unable to secure a direct replacement for the Argentine playmaker.

What does missing out on Enzo Fernández’s replacement mean for Chelsea?
Timing proved to be Chelsea’s primary obstacle. Because Fernández’s £125 million move to Manchester City was finalized right at the close of the window, the club could not reinvest the proceeds into another target immediately. Backup targets, including Roma’s Manu Koné and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, were considered earlier, but neither deal could be materialized before the deadline expired.
As a result, Chelsea must navigate the upcoming fixtures without Fernández and without their intended mid-season signing. While Moisés Caicedo remains central to the midfield, forfeiting Fernández’s vision, passing range, and tempo management marks a major shift. Although a contingent plan was established, Monaco’s unexpected refusal ruined those arrangements at the final hour, forcing the Blues to rely entirely on their current squad options until the next window opens.
