In a move to overhaul its football infrastructure, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has targeted Spanish legend Andrés Iniesta for the role of sporting director.

While an agreement in principle was reportedly reached, the deal remains in a delicate state. The federation aims to leverage Iniesta’s legendary status and elite technical knowledge to refine the national team’s long-term strategy and sporting philosophy.

Current Status of Negotiations

Despite an official statement being prepared for release, recent reports indicate that finalization has stalled. While discussions are at an advanced stage, sources suggest the two parties have yet to align on specific financial terms. If confirmed, Iniesta would step into a pivotal leadership role, overseeing recruitment pathways and the overarching footballing DNA for the Atlas Lions.

Moroccan Vision for 2030

This pursuit is a cornerstone of Morocco’s aggressive ambition to become a global football powerhouse. Following their historic recent successes on the world stage, the FRMF is focused on building a world-class technical team ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host alongside Spain and Portugal. Bringing in a figure like Iniesta is seen as a bridge between the host nations and a statement of intent for the future of Moroccan football.
