The 2025/2026 Premier League season starts on Friday, and with it come five new rules designed to improve the game’s quality and flow.
The English FA hopes these changes will make for a more exciting and consistent season. While some new Premier League rules may have a bigger impact than others, each one is meant to be a significant adjustment.
For context, last season (2024/2025) saw a few notable changes, such as clubs being required to announce their lineups 75 minutes before kickoff. The number of match balls on the field was also increased to help keep the game moving.
What are these new Premier League rules?
According to a BBC Sports report, here are the five major changes for the 2025/2026 season:
- The Eight-Second Rule: To crack down on time-wasting, goalkeepers who hold the ball for more than eight seconds will now be penalized. The opposing team will be awarded a corner kick.
- Captains Only: In an effort to reduce player confrontations, only the team captain is allowed to approach the referee. Any other player who does so will receive a yellow card. The only exception is if the captain is the goalkeeper; in that case, another player can be designated to speak to the official.
- Penalty Retakes: A new rule now allows for a penalty to be retaken if a player accidentally double-kicks it. This change was reportedly prompted by a penalty incident involving Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid.
- Referee’s Discretion: Referees now have the authority to award a drop ball to the team they believe would have gained possession, even if they were not the last to touch the ball.
- Indirect Free Kick for Interference: If a coach, substitute, or a player who is off the field touches the ball just before it goes out of play, they will no longer be shown a yellow card. Instead, the referee will award an indirect free-kick to the opposing team.
