San Siro: Inter & AC Milan to demolish home

the San Siro

The Milan City Council has formally approved the sale of the San Siro stadium and the surrounding land to AC Milan and Inter Milan.

This pivotal decision, reached on Monday, September 29, 2025, with a narrow vote of 24 in favour and 20 against, allows the two clubs to proceed with plans to demolish the existing structure and construct a new, modern arena on the historic site.

The sale was secured due to the abstention of several members, which lowered the required majority threshold. While most councillors from the Democratic Party supported the proposal, others criticized the decision of the clubs’ Presidents, Beppe Marotta (Inter) and Paolo Scaroni (Milan).

This move ends decades of uncertainty over the stadium’s future and enables the clubs to move forward with plans for a new, privately owned facility that includes compliance with accessibility criteria and sustainability initiatives.

What is next for AC Milan and Inter Milan?

Following the sale, AC Milan and Inter Milan can begin the demolition of the San Siro and commence construction of a new, ultra-modern ground with 71,500 seats. The ambitious project is estimated to cost €1.2 billion and is scheduled for completion by 2031.

When was the San Siro built?

The iconic San Siro stadium was built in 1926 and is set to be demolished approximately 100 years later.
